Lortab may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

  • Hydrocodone can slow or stop your breathing. Never use Lortab in larger amounts, or for longer than prescribed. Narcotic pain medicine may be habit-forming, even at regular doses. Never share this medicine with another person, especially someone with a history of drug abuse or addiction. Keep the medication in a place where others cannot get to it.
  • MISUSE OF NARCOTIC MEDICINE CAN CAUSE ADDICTION, OVERDOSE, OR DEATH, especially in a child or other person using the medicine without a prescription.
  • Do not use Lortab if you have used a MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days, such as isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, or tranylcypromine.
  • An overdose of acetaminophen can damage your liver or cause death. Call your doctor at once if you have nausea, pain in your upper stomach, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, or jaundice (yellowing of your skin or eyes).
  • Stop taking Lortab and call your doctor right away if you have skin redness or a rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling.

Before taking Lortab

If you are allergic to acetaminophen (Tylenol) or hydrocodone, or if you have recently consumed alcohol, sedatives, tranquilizers, or other narcotic drugs, you should not use Lortab. If you have used an MAO inhibitor within the last 14 days, you should not take Lortab. A potentially harmful medication interaction may occur. Isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, and tranelcypromine are MAO inhibitors.

Some drugs may combine with hydrocodone and lead to serotonin syndrome, a potentially fatal illness. Make that your physician is aware if you also take medication for depression, mental illness, Parkinson’s disease, migraine headaches, severe infections, or the prevention of nausea and vomiting. Before making any changes to how or when you take your medicines, consult your doctor. To ensure that Lortab is safe for you, inform your physician if you have:

  • liver disease, cirrhosis, or if you drink more than 3 alcoholic beverages per day;
  • a history of alcoholism or drug addiction;
  • diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, bowel obstruction, severe constipation;
  • kidney disease;
  • low blood pressure, or if you are dehydrated;
  • a history of head injury, brain tumor, or stroke;
  • asthma, COPD, sleep apnea, or other breathing disorders; or
  • if you use a sedative like Valium (diazepam, alprazolam, lorazepam, Ativan, Klonopin, Restoril, Tranxene, Versed, Xanax, and others).

People who are very unwell, malnourished, or otherwise weakened are more prone to have breathing difficulties while using Lortab. If you take narcotic medications during pregnancy, your child may develop a dependency on the substance.

This might produce withdrawal symptoms in the newborn that are life-threatening. Babies born dependent on habit-forming medications may need many weeks of medical care. Inform your physician if you are or want to become pregnant. Both acetaminophen and hydrocodone may enter breast milk and may be harmful to a breastfeeding infant. Lortab should not be used when breastfeeding.

How should I take Lortab?

  • Take Lortab exactly as prescribed. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Never take this medicine in larger amounts, or for longer than prescribed. An overdose can damage your liver or cause death. Tell your doctor if the medicine seems to stop working as well in relieving your pain.
  • Hydrocodone may be habit-forming, even at regular doses. Never share this medicine with another person, especially someone with a history of drug abuse or addiction. MISUSE OF NARCOTIC MEDICINE CAN CAUSE ADDICTION, OVERDOSE, OR DEATH, especially in a child or other person using the medicine without a prescription. Selling or giving away Lortab is against the law.
  • Measure liquid Lortab with the dosing syringe provided, or with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.
  • If you need surgery or medical tests, tell the doctor ahead of time that you are using Lortab. You may need to stop using the medicine for a short time.
  • Do not stop using Lortab suddenly after long-term use, or you could have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Ask your doctor how to safely stop using this medicine.
  • Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep track of the amount of medicine used from each new bottle. Hydrocodone is a drug of abuse and you should be aware if anyone is using your medicine improperly or without a prescription.
  • Always check your bottle to make sure you have received the correct pills (same brand and type) of medicine prescribed by your doctor.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Since Lortab is taken as needed, you may not be on a dosing schedule. If you are taking the medication regularly, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Seek immediate medical treatment or dial 1-800-222-1222 to reach the Poison Help line. Acetaminophen and hydrocodone overdose may be lethal. The first symptoms of an acetaminophen overdose include lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, perspiration, disorientation, and/or weakness. Later signs and symptoms may include upper abdominal discomfort, black urine, and yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes.

In addition to excessive sleepiness, indications of an overdose may include pinpoint pupils, cold and clammy skin, muscular weakness, fainting, a weak pulse, a slow heart rate, coma, blue lips, shallow breathing, or cessation of respiration.

What to avoid

This drug may affect your cognitive or behavioral abilities. Avoid using heavy equipment or driving until you know how Lortab may effect you. Falls and other incidents may be brought on by dizziness and extreme sleepiness.

Before taking any other cold, allergy, pain, or sleep drug, see a doctor or pharmacist. Numerous combination medications include acetaminophen (often abbreviated as APAP). Taking some products together may result in an overdose of acetaminophen, which can be lethal. Check the medication’s label to check whether it includes acetaminophen or APAP. Avoid consuming alcohol. It may raise the risk of liver damage associated with acetaminophen use.

Lortab side effects

Get immediate medical care if you exhibit the following symptoms of an allergic reaction to Lortab: hives; trouble breathing; facial, lip, tongue, or throat swelling. In rare instances, acetaminophen may produce a life-threatening skin response. This might occur even if you have previously taken acetaminophen without experiencing an adverse effect.

Stop taking Lortab and contact your doctor immediately if you get a rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling of the skin. If you have this sort of response, you should never use acetaminophen-containing medications again. Contact your doctor immediately if you have:

  • shallow breathing, slow heartbeat;
  • a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out;
  • confusion, unusual thoughts or behavior;

Seek medical attention right away if you have symptoms of serotonin syndrome, such as: agitation, hallucinations, fever, sweating, shivering, fast heart rate, muscle stiffness, twitching, loss of coordination, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Common Lortab side effects include:

  • drowsiness, headache;
  • upset stomach, constipation;
  • blurred vision; or
  • dry mouth.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

What other drugs will affect Lortab?

Narcotic (opioid) medication can interact with many other drugs and cause dangerous side effects or death. Be sure your doctor knows if you also use:

  • other narcotic medications – opioid pain medicine or prescription cough medicine;
  • drugs that make you sleepy or slow your breathing – a sleeping pill, muscle relaxer, sedative, tranquilizer, or antipsychotic medicine; or
  • drugs that affect serotonin levels in your body – medicine for depression, Parkinson’s disease, migraine headaches, serious infections, or prevention of nausea and vomiting.
